Private buses known as "matatus", the primary mode of transport in Nairobi, are mapped on their routes through GPS tracking from smartphones.
The data helps enable more efficient commuting routes and regulate bus stop locations. The project also helped in regulate the matatus' impact in erratically affecting traffic. The data collected by this project is also the first official record of existing routes. This information facilitates civic engagement and feedback during the transit planning process, and uses the data in planning new public transport routes.
